Time spent wandering through Antibes is at its prime in the old town. And if you’re anything like me, ambling through just two streets in this area might take a while, where you’re likely to pause every few steps to capture a photogenic detail, bathed in golden light. Here, the gently faded hues of the colourful building facades are framed by Mediterranean greenery. Even something as mundane as hanging laundry appears otherworldly; I could have explored the back alleys whilst quietly observing local life for hours.
In town, locate the farmers’ market at the Cours Massena and find the lady making socca – a chickpea pancake native to the region. She serves it piping hot – which means you’ll be playing hot potato with the food between your fingers – but even in sweltering heat, it’s a perfectly satisfying snack.
I left Antibes with my mind filled with imagery of the striking blue sea and romantic back streets, and of course, with a resolve to return.
